Is it possible—with the constraints of the health care system, with the horrors of a new viral pandemic—to love one’s patients and to love practicing medicine? Through linked essays—interwoven with poems—Air Fairy, Dragon, and Rockstar depicts work as a physician during the COVID-19 pandemic at a Tribal-owned inner city clinic in Salt Lake City. The patients—refugees, unhoused, poor, and often very sick—are both medically and socially complex.  The essays navigate through the pandemic, its death and uncertainty, and also through the narrator’s past filled with similar death and uncertainty.
